Loading and Securing Cargo in a Dry Van

Loading and Securing Cargo in a Dry VanAs any driver knows, the cargo on board your van must be protected and transported without incident. As such, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has enforced particular rules to ensure the vehicle and the cargo are properly prepared and secured. As we take a closer look at the safety regulations and expectations of commercial motor vehicles, ensure your commercial auto fleets are protected with the most comprehensive Wholesale and Distributor Insurance Package available, backed by Best Practice Procedures and aggressive risk management, which is required by this industry.

As stated by the FMCSA, commercial motor vehicles must abide by the following conditions:

  • The cargo must be properly loaded and secured and the vehicle’s equipment needs to be in good working condition including: the tailgate, tarps, spare tires, doors and any onboard equipment used for the transportation of goods.
  • Dry van operators should conduct an inspection checklist before hitting the road. Rid the trailer of any debris that may be littering the floor prior to picking up the cargo.
  • When loading the cargo, distribute the product evenly over the truck’s axles and always place the heaviest items on the bottom to prevent it from toppling over during transport.

Next, secure the cargo with one of the following, whichever is appropriate.

Ratchet Straps- These polyester webbing straps are the most versatile of the options as they come in many shapes and sizes to secure just about anything.

Friction Mats- Depending on the type of cargo being transported, these mats can help to prevent slipping while on the road. However, it is still important to place the heaviest items on the bottom, regardless of the type of cargo.

Jack Bars- These can be used to secure items that might topple over during transport and are placed on either side of the trailer’s walls for maximum security.

Dunnage Bags- Prevent cargo from shifting by filling these bags with air and placing them in between loads. Not only are they easy to use and versatile, but they are cost-effective, as well.
